“Colorful October”
‘Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.’ The appealing month of October 2016 has begun. Look for the fresh harvest crop of apples in the USA. Also apple cider is readily available in supermarkets in October. The organic, unpasteurized is delicious.
In the cooler climate states of North America the leaves begin to show their varied beauty across the landscapes and mountains. The smell of fall and cooler temperatures make for great outdoor walking as well as other activities.
We start the month on October 3rd with the Jewish Holiday, Rosh Hashanah meaning “head of the year” and one of the most sacred of Jewish holidays.
This Jewish Holiday represents a time of reflection on the previous year and completing with what needs to be finished — perhaps both mental and literal– and looking to the future in preparation of accomplishments to come. The holiday may be likened to the American New Year tradition of being thankful for the present year’s feats and making peace with any mistakes, then readying oneself for a fresh and successful new year.
Thankfully, we have a three day weekend in the first third of Octubre, Columbus Day on Monday, Oct. 10th. Next, the October 15th Saturday sky reveals the Hunter’s full moon (US Central Time). This vibrant October moon can guide hunters, promote action as well as aid farmers in gathering the last of the harvest for winter storage of needed food.
A darker night sky of October 31st will companion the spooky and fun time of Halloween costumes, events and neighborhood collection of festive candy.
Furthermore, the word “Octo” literally means eight in Latin with October being the eighth month in the Roman calendar. “Octo” carried over into the modern day Gregorian calendar and evolved over about two millennia’s and became our tenth month.
With the onset of the first month of fall, we begin our last quarter of the year. The weather is on our side prompting new energy for the autumn chores, schedule and preparations for winter and the holidays soon approaching and certainly being foretold in the retail stores and market places. Enjoy your October!
