“Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law” Romans 13.8.

Viewing Romans 13:8 in spiritual light, the scripture has Universal Love in mind. Divine Love is a Universal Law of Love which is the highest law and present within all laws as God is omnipresence, existing everywhere.

Moreover, Jesus is speaking of a social attitude and behavior with one another. When we let Universal Love rule our hearts the highest and the best outcomes occur in social interactions. There is such an example in John 8 when Jesus encounters a group of angry men and a woman caught in adultery. Stoning is forthcoming as her punishment. Jesus, centered in Divine Love calmly chooses the best words to soothe the people present. Then he methodically writes something in the sand twice during the episode. The woman was spared and the men disbanded. Divine Love acts through us in the most fulfilling ways for all.

Furthermore, it is practical to love one another including our enemies. Jesus was very wise in his day for promoting the truth statements, “love your enemies” and each other (Matthew 5:44). The political climate and social norms in Jesus’ time were harsh and volatile under the Roman rule in the Jewish society.

It seems that any decade or social climate we live in the expression of spiritual love is necessary, bringing balanced energy into society and doing magnificent good both visibly and invisibly.

Jesus gave much attention to the simple and power-filled word—Love. He believed love was the divine restorer of all things. Jesus impressed his followers and listeners throughout his ministry by speaking the divine truth about Love. He did so because living and giving from Love births wholeness, well-being, and righteous action.

Have you wondered why the word love has so many variations and meanings? Hmm. Love is first and foremost, Divine in potential and actuality.  Love can be varied in its expression, diluted and mixed with human intentions and passions. However the true essence of Love remains stable and sure—God love is the equivalent and expression of Divine Spirit.

One John 4:8 says: “God is love.” We may impose our emotions, interpretations, and actions upon what may be called love. Nevertheless, the full measure of Divine Love cannot be diminished by attitudes, thoughts, words, actions and definitions.

We realize when we are truly knowing and expressing love by the fruits it bears. Hence, we gain in understanding when we see the results of the love we are sending out. Universal love, spiritual love, holy love, and Christ love are some names for Divine Love. And are not limited to these few descriptive adjectives.

Divine Love is understood within ourselves. Our spirituality expands from within through inner light, illuminations, realizations and grace. In addition we learn from experiences of love and by love’s demonstration. In meditation, contemplation, connecting with Spirit in prayer, through nature, by selfless actions, through our creativity we know and gain insight into Divine Love.

It is true we also acquire an understanding of and the depth of Divine Love and what it is not through relationships of all kinds, particularly human. Nonetheless, love’s wisdom is not gained from the outer. It comes from within our heart’s wisdom, from our soul’s knowledge, from our contemplations on love, and from being open and blessed by God’s loving-grace showing up in and through our individual nature and in living our life.

We identify pure love through the actions and ways of other people. For instance, Dante in Paradiso knew of God’s love through Beatrice which came from his imagination and creativity within himself. The realization was no less impactful for Dante and the reader. It is said by spiritual teachers that we know and gain an individual understanding of Divine Love through and because of the grace of God. Certainly, wisdom of love’s true nature comes by grace and openness to awaken to Love.

Absolutely, we are graced now and eternally with Divine unconditional love. The spirit of holiness within and with us is continuous love. Hence, we actually live in the omnipresence of love and love’s blessings.

Affirmation: I do not limit Love’s potential. I freely Love myself and others and watch with awe the goodness it brings.
