The Restorative Quality of Listening
“Whenever there is some silence around you — listen to it. That means just notice it. Pay attention to it. Listening to silence awakens the dimension of stillness within yourself, because it is only through stillness that you can be aware of silence,” –Eckhart Tolle.
Listening–take advantage of the quiet moments in your day and night. These are precious occurrences in which we have the opportunity to feel the deep nature of life around and within us. Jesus listened to his inner qualities of intuition and wisdom. He listened in prayer to the kingdom of heaven within himself. From his center of quiet strength he was able to meet with challenges as he continued to move forward and fulfill his divine purpose.
We are able to maintain our equipoise by being a frequent listener. Opportunities to listen abound on a daily basis. Certainly, we like to be earnestly listened to. It feels good. To listen to another is a gift we give them. We can be assured that it blesses people beyond our knowing simply through our willingness to listen.
To listen to the hum of nature and the night sky is rewarding. Listening in prayer is an open invitation to our higher mind, putting us in touch with divine guidance and the treasures of wisdom. Also, that which we truly need is given when we listen and wait in prayer and contemplation. Therefore, by listening we say yes and accept the Good Divine spirit has ready and prepared in the here and now to give.
Furthermore, by using our ability to listen we gain real intimacy with others and with God. Hence, we cooperate through our receptivity to receive the richness of the Divinity within ourselves and others.
We hold before us this axiom–“Listen, or thy tongue will keep thee deaf,” Native American Proverb.
